The Diary Of Anne Frank

The Diary Of Anne Frank

Starring Millie Perkins, Joseph Schildkraut, Shelley Winters. (U)

Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning stage play of the same name, this drama was, of course, inspired by the diary of a young Jewish girl who went into hiding with her family for two years during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands during the Second World War.

Young Anne (Perkins, in her screen debut), was just 13 years old when she started writing in her diary about the restrictions placed upon Jews that drove her, her parents and sister into a hiding place over her father's business. They are joined by the Van Daans and their son Peter, and the two families live in secret for more than two years, terrified that they will be discovered by the Gestapo.

While nothing can quite convey the horror of war, and also the day to day tedium of being hidden as well as Anne's original diary, this movie does a good job of transforming her words to the screen. Children may find it slow-moving in places, but older ones will be touched by this classic tale.
