Tove Jansson’s comic strip gets a big screen outing, with the cute Finnish Moomins and their friends heading away from their pretty valley home and ending up at the French Riviera. They hang out with the rich and famous, but one of the lessons they learn is that it is all a bit superficial and that friendship and family is more important.

Made with traditional, hand drawn animation, this has much to amuse and delight grown-up Moomins fans, especially as the film stays faithful to one of Jansson’s original cartoons and was made under the watchful eye of his daughter Sophia. There is lots of wit and sweetness to the tale that should charm little children too, though kids over the age of seven may find it a bit too cute and cuddly and nice.

SCARY MOMENTS:

Parents should note that one of the Moomins ends up with a hangover but it is handled in such a way that little viewers won’t realise what that means.
