The highest-grossing film in Japan in 2016, this beautiful, stunning animated movie is also one of the best movies of the year.

It is the story of two teenagers who have never met – Tokyo schoolboy Taki and Mitsuha, a girl from a small town. They both start to have dreams in which they spend a day in the other’s body, then realise they are not dreams at all and in fact, they are swapping bodies in the real world. While in the beginning this leads to some funny moments (when he wakes up a girl, Taki can’t resist playing with his boobs), it then develops into something much more, part love story, part adolescent drama and finally, a larger story is revealed as the movie progresses that we won’t spoil here.

As directed by Makoto Shinkai – who has already, and deservedly, been compared to legendary Spirited Away director Hayao Miyazaki – this is gorgeous movie to look at that also manages to entertain and touch the heart. An absolute must-see for older kids and adults, this is just utterly, utterly lovely.
