Cats And Dogs

(2001)
Cats And Dogs

Starring Jeff Goldblum. Voices by Tobey Maguire, Alec Baldwin, Susan Sarandon, Sean Hayes. (PG)

As most pet owners are already aware, the world is secretly being run by our feline and canine friends. Cats and dogs are in fact locked in a struggle for world domination, and sweet little beagle Lou (Maguire) becomes the dogs’ latest recruit when he is adopted by scientist Professor Brody (Goldblum) and his family. You see, Brody is working on something the cats want to get their hands on, so it’s not long before sneaky Siamese kitties and other furry hitmen are despatched at the behest of the evil puss, Mr Tinkles (voiced by Will and Grace’s Hayes).

A mix of live action, animatronics and animation to make the animals appear to be talking, it’s a must-see for junior and adult pet owners, but those with an allergy to all things furry may be bored by the slim plot and annoyed by the sometimes ineffective merging of animation and live-action footage. If you own the DVD, it’s worth checking out the extras, including Mr Tinkles’s auditions for various movie roles, which are funnier than anything in the actual film.

SCARY MOMENTS:

None really, although very young children may be scared by the hit-cat that coughs up a weapon with his furball.
