Cats And Dogs 2: The Revenge Of Kitty Galore

(2010)
Cats And Dogs 2: The Revenge Of Kitty Galore

Voices by James Marsden, Nick Nolte, Bette Midler. (U)

Fans of the first Cats & Dogs movie will remember that, apparently, dogs are defending the earth from nefarious cats who want to take it over, right under our very noses. This time round, a German shepherd police dog named Diggs (Marsden) is taken away from his police partner (Chris O’Donnell) after bungling his canine duties, and is recruited by doggy spies to stop hairless cat Kitty Galore (Midler) from taking over the world.

It’s pretty silly stuff aimed at the under-10s, and there are some movie references thrown in that will fly over their heads completely (presumably they have been added to keep parents amused), from the opening James Bond-like musical titles (Shirley Bassey singing Pink’s ‘Lets Get This Party Started’ over them) to a Silence Of The Lambs homage when a jailed Mr Tinkles (Sean Hayes) – the best character from the first movie – makes a brief appearance. The talking cats and dogs are fun to look at, of course, and the plot moves along at a fair pace. Junior fans of the first movie will like it (maybe more than the first movie) and accompanying grown-ups will just find it cute but forgettable.

Note the film was released in cinemas in 3D but really didn’t need to be.
