Christmas With The Kranks

(2004)
Christmas With The Kranks

Starring Tim Allen, Jamie Lee Curtis. (PG)

Based on a story, Skipping Christmas, written by John Grisham (the author better known for thrillers like The Firm and The Client), this weak comedy stars Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis as Luther and Nora Krank, who decide to skip this year’s Yuletide festivities since their daughter won’t be at home with them, and spend the money on a cruise instead (they usually decorate inside and out, with the neighbours all competing to see who can have the most lavish display). The neighbours aren’t too happy with the Kranks letting the side down, however, and begin a campaign to convince them to deck their hall and spray fake snow on their roof.

If you think your family has lost sight of the true meaning of Christmas (you know, that it’s not just about presents, too much mulled wine and flashing Santa lights), this film is to be avoided as it’s about the spirit of shopping, not the spirit of goodwill to all men. And if you still have warm Yuletide sentiments in your household, you’re better off avoiding this humourless, mean movie too, as it will just make you want to strangle the nearest Santa.
