Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead

Don't Tell Mom The Babysitter's Dead

Starring Christina Applegate, Joanna Cassidy. (12)

A sort of teenage Home Alone, as Sue Ellen (Applegate) finds herself up to her neck in trouble when her mother goes to Australia for two months, leaving an aged babysitter in charge. Of course, said carer drops down dead, Sue Ellen and her siblings take the poor woman to the mortuary – and then discover the money their mother had left for them while she was away is in the babysitter’s pocket (and she’s already been buried). Rather than get mum to come home, Sue Ellen fakes her CV to get a job (and of course gets a good one), while her brothers and sisters run amok at home.

Unfortunately the writers behind this film aren’t as skilled as Sue Ellen is with her resumé, and this is pretty much devoid of laughs. Adults will hate it, because all the kids are unlikeable, while kids will just yawn at the dullness of it all. X-Files fans should note that a young David Duchovny pops up as one of Sue Ellen’s weaselly workmates.
