Doug's 1st Movie

Doug's 1st Movie

Voices by Thomas McHugh, Fred Newman. (U)

For the uninitiated, Doug was a TV animated series that originated in the US on the channel Nickelodeon, who also brought us Rugrats and SpongeBob SquarePants. It has to be said that – taken as a series or as a movie – Doug isn’t on a par with either, but if kids like the show they will probably find something entertaining in this feature-length version.

Twelve-year-old Doug (McHugh) and his pal Skeeter (Newman) befriend a monster that lives in the local polluted lake. Calling him Herman Melville, the boys decide the critter’s pretty nice, but Doug has other things on his mind apart from saving a friendly monster – he’s trying to pluck up the courage to ask Patti Mayonnaise to the school dance. Hmm – pollution, dating, social status, judging people by the way they look – could this simple little movie be deeper than it looks? Nah.
