Ferngully: The Last Rainforest

Ferngully: The Last Rainforest

Voices by Tim Curry, Samantha Mathis, Christian Slater. (U)

An eco-friendly animated adventure doesn’t sound very enjoyable, but actually it’s pretty sweet, especially as the environmental message isn’t bludgeoned into the viewer’s consciousness at every available opportunity.

Zak’s (Jonathan Ward) job is to mow down vegetation, but he soon learns what he is doing is wrong when a cutesy fairy named Crysta (Mathis) shrinks him to her size and shows him what damage he and his big human hands have been doing. Unfortunately, it isn’t just humans who are causing trouble, so Zak, Crysta and a bat named Batty (voiced by Robin Williams) also have to do battle with the evil spirit Hexxus (Curry), who is quite happy for the fairies’ home of FernGully to be demolished.

It’s quite entertaining stuff, with good vocal performances from the cast (Curry and Williams especially) and lush animation that should keep kids entertained while they unwittingly absorb the eco-message. A video sequel, FernGully 2: The Magical Rescue, followed in 1997, but with none of the original voice cast and only half as much charm.

Star Star Star

Young viewers may find Hexxus, the bad guy who wants to destroy Ferngully, quite scary.
