Flintstones In Viva Rock Vegas, The

Starring Mark Addy, Stephen Baldwin. (PG)

Uh-oh. Always beware a sequel (or in this case, a prequel) in which none of the original main cast return (could it be because they read the script?) Of course, in this case, John Goodman and Rick Moranis and pals were probably too old to play younger versions of Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble, but even with the miracle of age-defying make-up and computer-generated trickery, it’s unlikely either would have signed on for this weak attempt to cash in (six years later!) on the success of The Flintstones movie.

Set before Fred married Wilma and Barney married Betty, this adventure relocates the boys (Addy and Baldwin) and their gals (Kristen Johnston, Jane Krakowski) to a casino in Rock Vegas. Fred and Wilma (who has run away from her domineering mother, played here by Joan Collins) fall in love, but Wilma has another suitor, the smarmy and rich Chip Rockefeller (Thomas Gibson) in hot pursuit. Kids who liked the first movie may find a few moments to laugh at, but there’s not much to recommend this to grown-ups except a terrifically hammy performance from Alan Cumming as rocker Mick Jagged.
