High Wind In Jamaica, A

(1965)
High Wind In Jamaica, A

Starring Anthony Quinn, James Coburn. (U)

A rollicking movie for older kids that boasts pirates and a dangerous sea voyage, this is based on the novel by Richard Hughes. Emily (Deborah Baxter) and her siblings’ parents don’t think they are getting the proper British upbringing in Jamaica, where they live, so mum and dad decide they should return to England. However, during the journey their ship is boarded by pirates, and the children end up stowing away on the pirate ship, much to the consternation of Captain Chavez (Quinn) and his first mate Zac (Coburn), who soon get more than they bargained for.

A slower pirate adventure than, say, Pirates of the Caribbean, this is nonetheless an interesting adventure, thanks to some good performances (including a young Martin Amis in his only screen role as the eldest brother) and a plot twist that keeps your attention until the end. It has got some serious, moral themes, so do note it’s for children over the age of 11 only.
