Jason And The Argonauts

(1963)
Jason And The Argonauts

Starring Todd Armstrong, Honor Blackman. (U)

Made back in 1963, this boy’s own fantasy adventure is best remembered for the effects by stop-motion genius Ray Harryhausen, who also worked on Clash of the Titans and The 7th Voyage of Sinbad. According to Greek mythology, Jason (Armstrong) cannot claim the throne of Thessaly until he returns with the magical Golden Fleece. So off he sails with the brave Argonauts to do battle with whoever crosses their path on their way to retrieve it.

Very young viewers would probably be scared by creatures such as the seven-headed Hydra, but young boys who love sword-and-sandal epics will thrill at the army of skeletons Jason has to battle and adults will be pretty impressed as well – it still looks great today and remains Harryhausen’s most impressive special effect from all his films.

SCARY MOMENTS:

As mentioned above, the hydra, the skeletons and Talos the giant will be too scary for the under eights.
