Jingle All The Way

(1996)
Jingle All The Way

Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sinbad, Jake Lloyd. (PG)

Not sure which is worse – Arnold Schwarzenegger in a comedy, or a movie that celebrates the fact that Christmas is an excuse for commercialism and greed. The big Austrian oak stars as Howard Langston, a dad who doesn’t spend enough time with his bratty son (The Phantom Menace’s annoying tyke, Jake Lloyd). He thinks all will be made better, however, if he gets his hands on the toy his son wants for Christmas – the much sought-after (and sold out) Turbo Man. Of course, he’s not the only one after the toy – a deranged postman (Sinbad) wants one for his kid too, so Howard goes from being Mr Polite to Mr Angry in his quest to buy his son’s love.

There’s not much else to this comedy, apart from some cartoon-style violence. Kids may cheer as Arnie goes to any length to get his hands on the toy (including chasing a child through one of those play-tunnel things they have at kids’ restaurants), while adults will just wish he would turn into the Terminator and blast all the other irritating parents and kids (and the scriptwriter for good measure) out of the way.
