Jurassic Park: The Lost World

(1997)
Jurassic Park: The Lost World

Starring Jeff Goldblum, Julianne Moore, Vince Vaughn. (PG)

You thought all the nasty dinosaurs that terrorised everyone in Jurassic Park had died? Well, think again. Turns out there is a second island, ‘site B’, where the dinosaurs were reared before being transported to the park, and it seems the little blighters are getting ready to chomp on some human meat again. With Richard Attenborough as Hammond, the billionaire who created Jurassic Park, sidelined this time, it’s up to Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm to return and save the day with his pals – but to complicate things even further, a rival team is on the island (led by Pete Postlethwaite’s barmy hunter), hoping to bag a T-rex as a trophy.

With Postlethwaite chewing more scenery than any dinosaur, this is sillier than the original movie, especially when the T-Rex is captured and transported to the US, where it escapes and goes on a rampage while Goldblum pursues it in a car. The action sequences are terrific, of course, and there are some scary bits (especially when the velociraptors are about), and the obligatory child in peril (one wonders about Spielberg’s psyche), but this just isn’t as thrilling as the first film.

SCARY MOMENTS:

Like the first film, this is probably too scary for the under-10s.

The scariest bits are when a man is attacked by lots of little dinosaurs, when a T-rex rips someone in two, and an attack by a baby and adult dinosaur.
