Loch Ness

(1996)
Loch Ness

Starring Ted Danson, Joely Richardson. (PG)

Actually made for US television (and at the time, with a budget of $12 million, it was one of the most expensive TV movies ever made), this has zoologist Dr Dempsey (Danson) attempting to prove that the Loch Ness monster really does exist. He becomes involved with local innkeeper Laura (Richardson), and begins to believe there really may be a creature nestling in the Scottish loch, only to realise that Nessie’s existence is actually being protected by locals.

With effects from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop (the team behind the Muppets, Labyrinth and other fantastical movies) you’d expect this to be terrific. Unfortunately, far too much time is spent on Laura and Dempsey’s budding romance, and not enough on what’s lurking under the water (and when you do get to see something, it’s only fleetingly). Kids will be bored while adults will want to gag at the sheer niceness of it all.
