Angels In The Outfield

(1994)
Angels In The Outfield

Starring Danny Glover, Brenda Fricker, Tony Danza. (U)

A sort of junior Field of Dreams, this is a remake of the 1951 film of the same name. Young Roger (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) prays that his local baseball team will finally win a few games, and that his parents will get back together. To his surprise, when he watches his team play, he sees ghostly apparitions helping them win the game, but only he can see them.

A feel-good movie for kids, this has some sweet performances from Glover (as the team coach who believes Roger has really seen angels), Fricker (as Roger’s foster mother) and Christopher Lloyd (as Al the Angel), but suffers from a very twee script that tries to squeeze every last drop of sentimentality out of each frame. Even the most uncynical kids will choke on their popcorn before the end. Watch out for Adrien Brody (King Kong) and Matthew McConaughey in small supporting roles.
