Last Unicorn, The

Voices by Jeff Bridges, Mia Farrow, Christopher Lee, Alan Arkin. (U)

Based on the novel by Peter Beagle, this is the story of a unicorn (Farrow) who believes she may be the last of her kind. She sets out in search of any other unicorns, and while she has the help of apprentice magician Schmendrick (Arkin) and Prince Lir (Bridges), she also has an enemy – the vicious Red Bull (which may provoke sniggers from viewers familiar with the canned drink of the same name), who was conjured up by grumpy King Haggard (Lee) to rid the kingdom of unicorns.

It’s a lovely, melancholy story, but the film isn’t as enchanting as it should be, thanks to lacklustre animation and some very naff songs. Little viewers probably won’t mind, though.

Star Star

There are a few scary scenes for little ones, who may be frightened by Red Bull, the harpy and the talking skeleton.
