Little Polar Bear, The

Little Polar Bear, The

Voices by Wesley Singerman, Brianne Siddall. (U)

A German animated movie (Der Kleine Eisbär is the movie’s original title) based on stories by Dutch writer and illustrator Hans de Beer, this is the story of a cuddly little polar bear named Lars (Singerman), who befriends a seal pup named Robby (Siddall), only to discover the older polar bears don’t usually cosy up to seals (they usually eat them).

It’s all very cute and fluffy for little kids (and grown-ups will get a laugh from the neurotic lemmings who are constantly trying to off themselves), but while toddlers will love the cuddly bear and his pals, and the nicely drawn Arctic scenery, there are too many plots thrown in for them to keep up with – as well as Lars and Robby’s friendship, there’s an undersea adventure and a fish shortage thanks to a nasty trawler. If your child likes this, note that there have been four straight-to-DVD follow-ups.

Little ones may find the trio of nasty polar bears a little scary.
