Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King, The

Starring Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom. (12)

The final, and – if it’s possible – scariest instalment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It’s edge-of-the-seat stuff for older kids and adults as hobbits Frodo (Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) follow the clearly unstable, possibly treacherous Gollum (Andy Serkis) towards the flaming pits of Mordor and the ominous Mount Doom to destroy the Ring, while Gandalf and the other members of the Fellowship prepare to do battle.

And it’s bloody stuff when it comes. There’s a hideous giant spider that captures Frodo and will scare everyone, not just junior viewers, battles a-plenty and numerous unsavoury characters and creatures to have you hiding behind the sofa. It’s not intended for younger viewers, of course, but for those who have been brave enough to sit through parts one and two without their hands over their eyes, this is a stunning, fitting and deservedly Oscar-winning end to a superb series of movies (and if it encourages kids to read the JRR Tolkien books, even better).
