The Wild Thornberrys Movie

Voices by Lacey Chabert, Tom Kane. (U)

Created by the same team as Rugrats, The Wild Thornberrys TV series, which began in 1998, followed the adventures of Eliza (Chabert), who travels the world with her wildlife documentary-maker parents in a mobile home, along with teen sister Debbie, foster brother Donnie and pet monkey Darwin. Thanks to an encounter with an African shaman, Eliza can talk to the various animals she meets, and understand them, which comes in handy here when the family come across a herd of elephants threatened by evil poachers.

Unfortunately, while the plot would work nicely in a half-hour episode, it’s stretched a little too thin over nearly three times that length here. Tots who like the series may stick with it, but anyone else should just forward to the last half and the film’s entertaining climax as the family take on those nasty elephant snatchers.
