Weird Science

(1985)
Weird Science

Starring Anthony Michael Hall, Kelly LeBrock. (15)

Teen comedy maestro John Hughes (the man behind Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club) wrote and directed this teen fantasy that features early performances from Bill Paxton and Robert Downey Jr. It’s the story of two nerdy boys, Gary (Hall) and Wyatt (Ilan Mitchell-Smith) who, sick of being bullied by boys and ignored by girls, decide to create the perfect woman using a mixture of computer science and electrical-storm voodoo. What they get is the gorgeous Lisa (LeBrock) who is happy to do their every bidding (which doesn’t only include X-rated stuff – she does the cleaning, too).

For about two-thirds of the movie’s running time, this is really likeable silliness as Lisa teaches the boys a thing or two about morals and growing up, but then it all goes a bit haywire as Hughes throws mutant bikers (don’t ask) into the mix for the finale.
