New York Minute

(2004)
New York Minute

Starring Ashley Olsen, Mary-Kate Olsen. (PG)

If you are not a nine-year-old girl who thinks that twins Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen are mini-goddesses, this vehicle for the teen queens is probably not for you. And indeed, with the Olsens being replaced in tweenie affections by Miley Cyrus et al, this probably isn’t for anyone at all anymore! Unsurprisingly, the pair play sisters – one studious, one a wannabe rock chick – who don’t get on but are forced to come to some sort of truce when a series of mishaps occur during a trip to New York and they are pursued by manic truant officer Eugene Levy.

It’s extremely dumb stuff that makes most other tweenie fare seem like Kafka, as the twins try to evade Levy and some bad-guy video pirates in what is essentially a really bad rip-off of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Young girls may be amused at their antics, but adults will no doubt be horrified as the girls strut around Manhattan in hundreds of different outfits, skipping school, driving without a licence and even accepting a ride from a total stranger!
