The New Adventures Of Pippi Longstocking

(1988)
The New Adventures Of Pippi Longstocking

Starring Tami Erin, David Seaman Jr, Eileen Brennan. (U)

Swedish author Astrid Lindgren’s character Pippi Långstrump, to give her her Swedish name, has appeared in a handful of Swedish and German movies since 1949, but it wasn’t until 1988 that an English-language version was made. It’s not brilliant, but young fans of the books will enjoy red-haired, pigtailed Pippi’s adventures with pals Tommy and Annika, her horse Alfonso and pet monkey Mr Nilsson – it’s kiddie heaven as they have food fights, pillow fights and break all the grown-ups’ rules. Adults, however, will find Erin’s portrayal of precocious Pippi quite grating.

The other English language version of Pippi’s adventures is the animated Pippi Longstocking from 1997. A Swedish/German/Canadian co-production, it features very simple animation that may seem tiresome to kids brought up on Shrek and Finding Nemo, but passes the time amiably enough.
