The Rescuers

(1977)
The Rescuers

Voices by Bob Newhart, Eva Gabor, Geraldine Page. (U)

Young orphan Penny is being held captive by the nasty Miss Medusa and her henchman Snoops, but she manages to send a message in a bottle asking for help. And help comes in the form of Miss Bianca (Gabor) and Bernard (Newhart), two mice who work for the Rescue Aid Society of mice that’s located in the UN building in New York.

It’s not a classic Disney film, perhaps, and the animation is a bit scrappy, but this has some cute characters like Orville the albatross to keep kids amused. A sequel (Disney’s first animated-movie sequel to be released at cinemas), The Rescuers Down Under, followed in 1990 and was actually an improvement on the original – this time, Bianca and Bernard (both Newhart and Gabor returning to give their vocals) have to save an Australian boy and a golden eagle from a nasty poacher (George C Scott) with the help of another albatross, Wilbur (geddit – Wilbur and Orville… the Wright Brothers?), as voiced by John Candy.
