Voices by Jodi Benson, Gary Imhoff. (U)

There have been various versions of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale, including rarely seen Brazilian, Russian and Japanese animated ones, but the most accessible for little kids is this adaptation, directed by Don Bluth and Gary Goldman (who also made All Dogs Go to Heaven together).

Aimed squarely at little girls under the age of seven, it’s the story of a teeny tiny little girl named Thumbelina (Benson, who also voiced Ariel from The Little Mermaid) who wants to find a person to love who is just her size. Luckily, there is a prince who fits that description, but our plucky petite heroine first has to fend off the advances of a mean toad looking for a wife for her toady son. All very cute – though not strictly adhering to the Andersen story – but parents should be warned that the accompanying soundtrack is written and performed by (yikes!) Barry Manilow.
