Peter Pan 2003

Peter Pan 2003

Starring Jason Isaacs, Jeremy Sumpter, Rachel Hurd-Wood. (PG)

A live-action version of JM Barrie’s classic tale, this has impressive sets, costumes and magical moments to rival any Harry Potter movie. Definitely one for kids who think the Disney animated Peter Pan (reviewed above) is too young for them, this has darkness a-plenty as Peter Pan whisks the Darling children off to Neverland, where they come face to face with the dastardly Captain Hook and his bloodthirsty pirates.

Isaacs is enjoyably sinister as Hook and there are lashings of swashbuckling swordfights to thrill kids (boys may not be so keen on the bit when Wendy teaches Peter to kiss – ick). It’s not as fun as the cartoon, of course, and Sumpter is a rather awkward Peter (and looks too California-tanned and blond, too), but there’s plenty of action and adventure to get your timbers shivering.

Star Star Star

While it’s darker than the animated version, children over the age of 8 shouldn’t be fazed by the crocodile, Hook or scenes of kids in peril as they are reasonably mild.
