Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

Starring Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley. (12A)

Filmed back-to-back with the third part (At World's End), this Pirates sequel suffers a bit from being filler – you know from the beginning that nothing will be resolved and the movie will end on a cliffhanger to make you watch the next one. At over two hours long, it feels pretty bloated, too, but at least the original cast return for the high seas adventure.

The movie opens with Will Turner (Bloom) and his fiance Elizabeth Swann (Knightley) imprisoned by nasty Lord Beckett (Tom Hollander). He wants them to find Jack Sparrow (Depp), who himself has headed off on the Black Pearl ship to... oh, does it really matter? Every water-logged cliché is thrown into the sea from then on, from sea monsters to buried treasure, with a bit of voodoo and cannibalism thrown in for good measure. Bill Nighy in a rubber suit plays a squid-like Davy Jones, while Stellan Skarsgard is the only one of interest, playing Will's tragic dad. It's long, it's messy... and only worth catching if you are going to watch the third one as well.

Star Star Star

This film is aimed at children over 12 years old, mainly due to violent scenes.

Quite a few of the characters are pretty ghastly to look at – especially Davy Jones – and the scene involving the Kraken may make younger ones jump.
