Adventures Of Sharkboy And Lavagirl, The

Starring Taylor Lautner, Taylor Dooley. (U)

Robert Rodriguez, the creator/writer and director of the Spy Kids movies, delivers another kiddie adventure here, which was inspired by a story his seven-year-old son Racer made up. It’s the tale of a young boy named Max (Cayden Boyd) who has created another world in his mind to escape from school bullies and parents who ignore him. The name of this world is Planet Drool, and Max gets a shock when two characters he imagined, Sharkboy (yes, that is Taylor Lautner of Twilight fame, aged just 13) and Lavagirl, turn up on earth to reveal Drool really exists and they need Max’s help to save it from the nasty Mr Electric (George Lopez) – who looks a lot like Max’s real-world teacher Mr Electricidad – and even badder guy Minus.

It’s flashy, eye-popping stuff (especially during 3D sequences) as the trio wander across Planet Drool through places like the Land of Milk and Cookies to the finale that pits them against the bad guys. It’s nicely surreal for a kids’ film, but all the brightness and rapid images may make some viewers feel as if they are stuck in some mad, loud video game.
