The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement

(2004)
The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement

Starring Anne Hathaway, Julie Andrews. (U)

The Princess Diaries was a cute Pretty Woman-style tale for young girls about a Californian teenager named Mia (Hathaway) who discovers she is heir to the throne of Genovia, and this is a passable – if uninspired – sequel. Now a Princeton graduate, it turns out that Mia has to find a husband in thirty days in order to retain the Genovian crown, so with the help of her grandmother Queen Clarisse (Andrews) she sets about finding her Prince Charming.

Unfortunately, the film feels as if it was rushed together to cash in on the success of the original before Hathaway got too old to play the role. The script is sloppy, the plot obvious and the landmark event of Julie Andrews singing for the first time on film in over twenty years is wasted. Even worse, the wit of the original is completely absent, and this will only be of interest to die-hard fans of the first film, and even then they’ll be disappointed.
