Mr Magoo

(1997)
Mr Magoo

Starring Leslie Nielsen, Kelly Lynch. (PG)

The myopic sixties cartoon character Mr Magoo gets resurrected in the form of Leslie Nielsen for this predictable family comedy, which is basically an excuse for Nielsen to turn out his usual Naked Gun/Police Squad shtick under a different guise, and is only notable for some above-average action scenes (courtesy of Rumble in the Bronx director Stanley Tong) and a superb canine performance from Angus, Magoo’s bulldog.

The plot – unsurprisingly – is simple: bumbling millionaire Quincy Magoo unwittingly comes into possession of a stolen gem, and a ruthless jewel thief (Lynch, showing a previously untapped flair for comedy), her incompetent sidekick, the CIA and the FBI are all on the case to get it back. It’s exactly what you’d expect – endless bungling – aimed at a junior audience probably unaware of the original Magoo cartoon. So they’re unlikely to want to watch this anyway.
