The Muppet Movie

(1979)
The Muppet Movie

Starring Jim Henson, Frank Oz. (U)

Those loveable, eccentric puppets the Muppets, who first appeared in their own TV show in 1976, got a big-screen adventure in 1979 featuring all the much-loved characters, including Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Animal, the Swedish Chef and the Great Gonzo. Supposedly based on creator Jim Henson’s own journey to Hollywood, the film follows Kermit’s adventures as he leaves his swamp and heads to Tinseltown with his pals to seek his fortune, evading a frog’s-leg merchant along the way.

It’s like a Bob Hope and Bing Crosby road movie as the fuzzy puppets cross the country, and it stays true to the series that anyone over the age of thirty remembers and loves. With a (human) cast that includes Elliott Gould, Dom DeLuise, Bob Hope, Mel Brooks, Steve Martin, Richard Pryor, Telly Savalas and even Orson Welles, it’s a grown-up’s delight, but kids of all ages will laugh and enjoy the Muppets’ fun adventures. A must for everyone.
