The Muppets Take Manhattan

(1984)
The Muppets Take Manhattan

Starring Jim Henson, Frank Oz. (U)

After The Muppet Movie and The Great Muppet Caper came this third adventure for the gang created by Jim Henson. It’s more of the same, of course – this time, after failing to stage a musical on Broadway, the Muppets go their separate ways in New York, only for Kermit to be hit by a taxi and lose his memory.

It’s more childish than the first two films, with less humour aimed at grown-ups and a flashback sequence thrown in of the Muppets as babies that later became an animated TV series (Muppet Babies). But it’s still an entertaining Muppet movie, and includes the long-awaited nuptials of Kermit and Miss Piggy, as well as jokes aplenty, songs and cameo appearances from Gregory Hines, Joan Rivers, Liza Minnelli, Brooke Shields, and ex-New York Mayor Ed Koch.
