Monsters Vs Aliens

Monsters Vs Aliens

Voices by Reese Witherspoon, Seth Rogen, Hugh Laurie, Will Arnett, Kiefer Sutherland. (PG)

A terrific animated comedy that will appeal as much to adults as kids, Monsters Vs Aliens harks back to fifties and sixties monster movies (like Attack Of The 50ft Woman, The Fly and The Blob) as bride-to-be Susan (Witherspoon) is turned into a giant after coming into contact with an alien meteorite. Taken by the army to a secret location by General W R Monger (Sutherland), Susan – rechristened 'Ginormica' – is teamed with mad scientist Dr Cockroach (Laurie), formerly frozen fishy monster Missing Link (Arnett), a mega-insect named Insectosaurus and one-eyed blue blob B.O.B (Rogen). Together these biological misfits are asked to save the planet when aliens arrive to attack earth.

Packed with jokes, wonderfully funny characters (including an American president who can't remember which red button he presses to launch missiles and which one dispenses coffee) and nods to movies like War Of The Worlds and Dr Strangelove, this has lots of laughs for grown-ups. Kids haven't been forgotten, though, as there's much silliness too as Ginormica uses cars to rollerskate through town, or B.O.B (who is once seen trying to romance a jelly) tries to stop an alien by sticking to his shoe like gum. Brilliantly paced, smartly written, and a treat to look at, Monsters Vs Aliens truly is great fun for all the family.

Very small children may initially find Dr Cockroach, Insectosaurus and Missing Link a bit scary to look at.
