Sleepover

(2004)
Sleepover

Starring Alexa Vega, Mika Boorem. (PG)

Julia (Spy Kids’ Vega) and her pals want to be accepted by the cool kids in school, even if that means agreeing to a challenge set by the popular girls – to compete in an all-night scavenger hunt. Of course, numerous high jinks ensue, from Julia having to retrieve the shorts of her secret crush to getting her teacher to buy her a drink in an over-21 club just to fulfil the various tasks on her list.

Grown-ups will be reminded of John Hughes’s eighties comedies like Sixteen Candles, while young teens watching may raise an eyebrow at the odd soundtrack (who in 2004 still listened to ‘Wannabe’ by the Spice Girls?), but may get some enjoyment out of Vega’s exuberant performance. It’s relatively harmless stuff (if you can ignore the underage drinking bit) and pretty predictable and unoriginal, with some enjoyably silly moments thrown in.
