Spice World: The Movie

Spice World: The Movie

Starring Victoria Beckham, Geri Halliwell, Melanie Chisholm, Melanie B, Emma Bunton. (PG)

Once upon a time, there were five happy, bubbly girls who sang and danced a little and wore next-to-nothing a lot. They found fame and fortune in a pop band and then decided to make a movie of their rise to stardom, which they hoped would be a bit like the Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night. And, though it was not perhaps the best film in the whole wide world, those Scary, Ginger, Sporty, Baby and Posh Spice girls knew that every little boy and girl in the land would come from far and wide to see their movie, and then buy the soundtrack album to make them even more money.

Of course, that was then and this is now. The Spice Girls have split, attempted solo careers, appeared in the tabloids… and been replaced in the hearts of preteen girls by other, possibly more talented, pop groups. But this film remains, and while most tweenie viewers probably have no idea who the Spice Girls were, there’s just about enough silliness, catchy songs and sparkly outfits to keep them amused. Adults, however, who aren’t tone deaf, are advised to steer well clear.
