Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron

Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron

Voices by Matt Damon, James Cromwell. (U)

A stunning-to-look-at piece of animation, this is a beautiful film but one in which so much attention has been paid to the details, that kids may be bored by the lack of actual adventure (or dialogue, for that matter – Spirit doesn’t talk, we just hear his thoughts via the film’s narration). Set in the Old West, it is the story of a stallion (thoughts voiced by Matt Damon) who wants to run free and is helped by a Lakota brave named Little Creek (Daniel Studi) to escape from mean humans.

There’s even an equine love story – Spirit falls for mare Rain – but this is mainly worth catching for the animated scenery that’s so carefully rendered it looks real. One for older kids, perhaps, and parents should be warned – songs are provided by Bryan Adams.
