Stardust

Starring Charlie Cox, Claire Danes, Michelle Pfeiffer. (PG)

If you and your young(ish) ones liked The Princess Bride, you'll enjoy this similar fantasy adventure directed by Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake) that’s based on the novel by Neil Gaiman (Coraline).

Young Tristan (Cox) has grown up in a sleepy English village, unaware the wall that surrounds it is actually the border to a magical land. Chasing a falling star for his self-absorbed beloved (Sienna Miller), he crosses the wall and finds himself caught up in an adventure featuring a group of princes fighting for a kingdom (Rupert Everett, Jason Flemyng and Mark Strong among them), a witch in search of eternal youth (Pfeiffer), a pirate with a secret (Robert De Niro), and a beautiful woman (Claire Danes) who is being hunted.

Played deliciously tongue-in-cheek by all involved, this adventure (which owes a debt to the movies of Terry Gilliam, such as The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen) boasts an all-star cast that also includes David Walliams, Ricky Gervais and Peter O'Toole. It’s a fun fairytale romp, and while not as wonderful as The Princess Bride, it’s nonetheless a decent magical adventure for adults and older kids.

SCARY MOMENTS:

The film is aimed at children over the age of 10 – younger ones will find the witches scary, and there are a few stabbings and murders before the final fight scene.
