Batman: The Movie

Batman: The Movie

Starring Adam West, Burt Ward. (U)

Zap! Bang! Kapow! Yes, a feature film version of the most ridiculous show to grace our TV screens does exist, Batfans. Originally planned as the pilot episode of the sixties show Batman, it was actually released as a movie following the success of the first series. Adam West and Burt Ward are, of course, the leotard-wearing, utility-belt-sporting Dynamic Duo, protecting the people of Gotham City with gizmos like the BatBoat (designed especially for the film) from a quartet of bad guys: the Joker (Cesar Romero), the Riddler (Frank Gorshin), the Penguin (Burgess Meredith) and Catwoman (Lee Meriwether).

As camp as you’d expect, this is desperately silly stuff that should have kids and adults in stitches as daft dialogue is spouted (‘Penguin, Joker, Riddler… and Catwoman, too! The sum of the angles of that rectangle is too monstrous to contemplate!’), our heroes are placed in danger and the bad guys are foiled once again. It’s also an ideal choice if your kids are into superhero stories but you don’t think they’re old enough for the more recent Batman movies yet.

Star Star Star

It’s all fairly silly but little ones may find the Joker quite scary.
