Beastly

(2011)
Beastly

Starring Alex Pettyfer, Vanessa Hudgens, Mary-Kate Olsen. (12A)

Following hot on the heels of Red Riding Hood, this is another teen re-imagining of a fairy tale, this time Beauty And The Beast. It's based on the teen novel Beastly by Alex Flinn, and stars Alex Pettyfer as Kyle, a posh and pretty prep school teen who is as shallow as he is handsome. His witchy classmate, Kendra (Olsen) decides to teach him a lesson by casting a spell that makes him 'beastly' by covering his face and body in tattoos and scars. He has a year to find a girl to say 'I love you' for the spell to be broken, otherwise he will forever look like one of Ozzy Osbourne's fans (the tats are actually a good look for ex-model Pettyfer, which is one of the movie's problems).

After sulking in his swanky apartment for a while, Kyle finds his inner pretty and sets his heart on nice bookish girl Lindy (Hudgens). There are complications – including her junkie dad – of course, but even if you don't know the fairy story on which this is based, you'll figure out every plot point within the first 10 minutes. There are good moments, mainly courtesy of Neil Patrick Harris as a blind tutor who befriends Kyle, but in the end this is nothing more than a calculated attempt to cash in with the Twilight audience of teen girls.
