Glee: The 3D Concert Movie

(2011)
Glee: The 3D Concert Movie

Starring Cory Monteith, Dianna Agron, Lea Michele. (PG)

The title says it all – this 'documentary' movie follows the stars of hit TV series Glee as they go on tour, singing their little socks off for tweenie audiences who scream for their versions of 'Don't Stop Believin', 'Slave 4 U' and 'Teenage Dream'.

It's all terribly cute as the actors play their TV characters while on stage and behind the scenes (we're supposed to believe the New Directions crew from a small town in Ohio are somehow performing in front of thousands of screaming kids all of a sudden), and each one is given their chance to shine from Rachel (Michele) to Artie (Kevin McHale) to Brittany (Heather Morris). And yes, season two cameo star Gwyneth Paltrow turns up, too, to deliver her version of 'Forget You'.

While mean cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (Jane Lynch) is sadly absent despite being in the trailer, this is a must for Glee fans who didn't get tickets for the tour, and also features interviews with some fans to whom Glee really means something special (a gay boy cruelly outed by a friend, a girl with Aspergers for whom Glee has introduced her to new friends). Anyone else will wonder why you would spend £8 to watch a lot of twentysomethings pretending to be teenagers belting out cover version (aside from the terrific original song 'Loser Like Me'), but this movie isn't aimed at cynics, adults, or rock music aficionados – this is one for true Gleeks only.
