Three Musketeers 1993, The

(1993)
Three Musketeers 1993, The

Starring Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Chris O'Donnell. (PG)

One of many adaptations of Alexandre Dumas' classic novel – the other one kids will enjoy is the kitsch 1973 version with Oliver Reed, Raquel Welch and Richard Chamberlain – this one boasts a cast of hot nineties actors buckling their swashes against Tim Curry in pantomime mode as meanie Cardinal Richelieu. You can imagine that Kiefer Sutherland (as Athos), Charlie Sheen (as Aramis), Oliver Platt (as Porthos) and Chris O'Donnell (as D'Artagnan) signed onto the movie just so they could romp around in frilly shirts waving their swords at each other and get paid for it, but if they were having lots of fun on set it doesn't actually show much on screen as they all mope around looking uncomfortable.

Aptly referred to at the time as 'Young Guns In Tights', this is packed with stunts boys will like, plus good-looking actors having sword fights and fist fights, dodging explosions and carrying off daring rescues as the three musketeers, and new recruit D'Artangnan (so annoying you hope he'll have a sword-related accident as soon as possible) try to stop Richelieu do something dastardly that threatens King Louis XIII and his queen. Unfortunately, it's hampered by a cheesy script and a lack of true excitement and fun that is essential for such an adventure.
