Dear John

(2010)
Dear John

Starring Channing Tatum, Amanda Seyfried, Richard Jenkins. (12A)

Soldier John Tyree (Tatum) falls for college girl Savannah (Seyfried) while on leave, and in the space of a couple of weeks the two fall in love. When he has to return to army life, the pair write to each other to keep their relationship alive, but can a brief romance become a life long relationship when John decides to re-enlist following the events of 9/11?

Based on a Nicholas Sparks novel – his books have also been translated into the movies The Last Song, A Walk To Remember and The Notebook – this is a rather wishy washy tale that only really works in the scenes between Tatum and Jenkins as his dad. Their interaction is moving, but the romance between Tatum and Seyfried is unconvincing, especially since Seyfried seems spaced out and distant throughout the whole affair. When the bump in the road of their romance comes, viewers will sympathise with him not her, and the conclusion is so frustrating that most people will watch the final credits wishing the pair had never met in the first place.
