One Direction: This Is Us

(2013)
One Direction: This Is Us

Starring Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson. (PG)

Squeal! If you have a girl in the house between the ages of five and fifteen, chances are they know every song by pop band One Direction by heart, know which band member – Liam, Harry, Zayn, Niall and Louis– is their favourite, and they’ve had the release date of this documentary circled on their calendars for a year. They won’t be disappointed with this documentary that follows the band from their early days as a manufactured boy band on The X Factor to their most recent sold out tour.

In between, there’s nothing particularly shocking or revealing  – the boys miss their mums, they all get on, they’re very sweet and likeable – though girls will get to see Harry with his shirt off (squeal!), watch the boys hide in bins (giggle!) and see their heroes on stage (faint!). Accompanying grown-ups will be surprised to learn the director of this confection is Super Size Me’s Morgan Spurlock, and relieved watching a documentary of this British band is far more enjoyable than sitting through the one on Justin Bieber.
